Black & Brass Coffee Roasting Co. is a coffee shop right on Route 6, outside of downtown Honesdale.
I had originally visited in 2022 and was going to write my review based on that. However, I figured that wasn’t giving it a fair shake (since my review was not going to be very good). I assumed some things may have changed, as I think they were somewhat new to the location then, and I was correct – they did. But that doesn’t mean it was all for the better!
The Food and Drink
Back when I made my first visit, I only had a coffee. I am a hot, black coffee drinker so I can’t speak much to the fancy drinks and whatnot. The coffee was fine. Nothing that blew me away, but not notably bad either. This time I had a chai tea latte and an apple turnover. I was not overly impressed by either. The tea seemed bland, and the turnover tasted like something you’d get at the grocery store out of a box. Not bad, but not great.
The Vibes
The thing that really disappointed me my first time around was the coffee shop itself. My initial comments here:
I think what disappointed me most was the atmosphere. The inside was rather unwelcoming for a trendy coffee shop. Just a couple of couches in the corner. They have a literal waterfall outside, and no window and seating area to look at it, which seems crazy to me.
Happy to say this has definitely improved, as I figured it would. There is a lot of nice seating. The vibes are very typical/trendy/cozy coffee shop. There is a window out of the back now facing the waterfall, however they still inexplicably decided to have all the high-top window seating facing the parking lot. I don’t understand why they wouldn’t put the row of high-top window seats in the back facing the outside and the waterfall, and the low couches in the front. Also, I would have added more windows in the back if it was my decision to make, but that isn’t always possible so who knows.
The Outside
Now back to the whole waterfall right outside your back door thing.
My original review:
Then we go outside. They have a few crappy tables set up. No one bothered to level anything off, so you are basically sitting on a ramp on uncomfortable chairs.
Now, this got both better and worse. They got much nicer chairs and tables, and they are level, but that is because they moved them way back up to the paved area. So, you used to be much closer to the waterfall which was nicer. Now you can’t see it as well, but overall, the seating is an improvement.
But look how close it used to be! (pic from 2022)
Final Thoughts
There was definitely improvement from my first visit. The place was rather busy, so I may be in the minority here, but I just don’t love it. The food and drinks never impress me. The prices are typical to high, not anything that would draw me in either. The outside is pretty enjoyable though, so if I were swinging by and craving a coffee on a nice day, I’d possibly decide to stop here. The waterfall saves it for me though. But hey, I always say give it a try yourself. It might be just your cup of “coffee”.
They have a Facebook page and website.
